Mary Blair
In the background of many of the great Dinsey films, from Cinderella to Peter Pan, there was Mary Blair, directing with her warm illustrations the look and feel of the film. Mary Blair is one of the most brillient artists of all time someone who's work the animators at Dinsey always wished they could put directly into animations. Sadly her art did not lend itself well to this medium, its simplicity of form, helped to make it one of the most effective communicators of emotion, and color. For those who don't know high quality animations have concept artist who before anything is designed, create works of art to inspire the artists and script writers who will later work on the film. This is what Mary Blair did, she helped to determine how the films, and the characters would feel. For those interested in studying and better understanding color Blair is a good artist to study for her work determined the color choices for some of the greatest works of art of the last century. Blair had a number of styles which she used to great effect, including more rounded water colors, a near Victorian style of illustration, and a flat imagery that those doing Flash art or other modern digital work would do will to study. Lucky you can still find Blairs work online at Flickr or in the book "The Art and Flair of Mary Blair." |
