Children's Book Illustrators and Creators of Cute Art

Nursery Decoration with books.

Think of how wonderful a good children’s section of a book store is for children. With energetic displays of beautifully illustrated books bookstores have perhaps hit on one of the best decorating methods for children, that is not just having beautiful pictures or good paint color choices, but also having beautiful picture books on display. For not only are such displays functional in giving a child reading material, but they tend to have the most beautiful art for children available.

There are obviously many books to choose from, hundreds of thousands in fact making choosing good ones a daunting task. We have listed some of the best children’s books illustrators there are and written a short article on each.

Top Ten Cute Artists-plus a few

My ever expanding list of the greatest creators of cute art, and cute pictures. As anyone who has seen my writtings in the past will understand cute art is one of the greatest forms of art their is, despite what anyone may think cute art is not just for children. The Replica's of Samuel Butcher's work for example has never really been used for children, rather these figures now known as Precious Moments are collected by adults everywhere.
Robert McCloskey
"Make Way For Ducklings" has a statue in Boston dedicated to it, this children's book is fun and whimsical, while "One Morning in Maine" is purely sentimental. His art is charming as will as dynamic. Every page of the books he illustrated speaks volumes with his composition, and elegance of line and form, his is truely a masters art.

Ezra Jack Keats
Living and working in New York Keats brought the city to the world of cute art, with his illustrations of children playing in the snow, lower income appartment buildings, and bright childs friendships. His pictures truely are masterful and full of life.

Fred Moore, the early master of Disney's Cute Art and Design
One of the early animators for Disney he is the true designer of Mickey as we know him, taking the humorous character of the early black and whites and changing him into one of the the icons of our world. He also is known for his design of the dwarves in Snow White, the illustration for this same movie poster, and many other wonderful works of art. Sadly he died a tragic death at the age of 40 so we never got to see his world come to full frutation, but he had already trained many of the people who would later come to be known as Disney's Nine Old Men, the masters of animation who have inspired much of what has come to be in the world of art for children.

Mary Blair

One of the concept artists for Disney, she was behind the scenes of many of his early movies from Alice in Wonderland to Peter Pan. She also illustrated many of the Golden Books, some of the most widely read of all children's books. Though her work was always behind the scenes it helped to control the direction of some of the most influencial works of art for children and some of the greatest cute art of all time.

Jody Bergsma, An Artist of Love Beauty and Dreams
Little Known and under apprieciated I debated for some time whether to put her on the list, after all is the top ten list based on influance or beauty of work. Many tout influance as of primary importance but in the end I chose to go with beauty with regards to this artist. Her work is truly stunning and I would be proud to help people discover it.

Barbera Lavallee
Barbara Lavallee is another little known artist, with a few children's books which can at times be found in book stores she is a little better known then Bergsma. Her work is amazingly stunning, a glimps into the every day life and concerns of a world few will ever experiance. The people she draws are rounded and warm, with an energy and vibrince that few artists can match.

Molly Bang
Molly Bang exploded onto the children's book scene with a rare chase book with no words at all, "The Grey Lady and the Strawberry Snatcher." Few illustrations are so will done as the ones in this book. And her later books loose nothing as they continue to show her mastery of art, a wonderful and intelegent artist always aware of the meaning each brush stroke portrays Molly Bangs books will be beloved forever.

Eleanor Campbell
Few know the name of the primary illustrator behind the Dick and Jane stories but everyone knows her work. Her stunning pictures are the story of happy children, something that one would wish their could be more of.  Every painting is a testement to the warmth and joy that can exist in the world and the clear way in which it outlined its theme help millions of children learn to read.

Beatrix Potter
The amazing thing about Beatrix was her ability to be one of the first to make pictures so sentimental, with animals living sweet English lives. Her pictures are filled with emotion, beautiful in their soft style, and form. Few people manage to succeed when they are in their thirties with no background of success, most who make it do so early or not at all. Beatrix Potter's art was beautiful enough to make her a rare exception to this rule.

Samuel Butcher
Precious Moments, the name is sentimental and brilliently chosen as was having Samuel Butcher do the intial designs for these works. He is a stunning artists, his illustrations speak of the joy of children, not so much the joy of being one but the joy of having one. For all the stress and the difficulty people still choose to be parents and still wish to be grandparents. Samual Butchers mastery is the ability to explain why in a cute work of art.
